Lios na Sí Irish Drama.

1st Apr 2020

In keeping with our school policy of promoting Irish culture and language, the P7.class had the opportunity to participate in a short drama in Irish,  Lios na Sí.

At the start of the Spring term, the class began practicing the lines of the play, facilitated by Mr.Walter Bradley and class teacher Mrs. Michelle Kelly.  All the children worked very hard both in school and at home, using the My School technology.

The boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and quickly got accustomed to the pronunciation and performance of their parts.

The play Lios na Sídhe, written by Mr.Bradley, tells the story of a local man who inherits a farm and makes the fateful decision to cut down a Fairy Thorn to build himself a bigger house on the land.

He coaxes a number of his friends to help him, in spite of being warned by The Fairy Host in nightmares, not to.

They all end up in the Court of the Fairy Fort, and his friends are called as witnesses in the case against him. He is found guilty and sentenced by the King of the Fairies, to be handed over to the Bean Sí. The play has a happy ending though. He awakens at the foot of the tree and realises he has a second chance. His friends turn up to help him chop the tree down as they had planned but he has learned the error of his ways and says that he would never do such a thing to the sacred tree of the Fairies.

Unfortunately, due to the outbreak of Covid  19, the class did not get a chance to perform the play for an audience in school as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge activities but it was a very worthwhile experience and one which will benefit them on their transition to secondary school.

Here are a number of clips from their rehearsals.
