October Newsletter

5th Oct 2020

Our P1 pupils had a very busy month of September settling into their new surroundings and making lots of new friends.  Thank you for sending in recent baby photographs and patterned socks. We enjoyed guessing who each baby was as part of our topic work on Ourselves.  We continue to focus on the human life cycle and growing up by discussing things we can do independently as a child and we discovered that lots of P1 pupils help out at home by completing a little chore to lend a hand.  Some pupils emptied the dishwasher, put on their own uniform, matched the laundry socks, buttered their own toast at breakfast time and one pupil helped her dad put up fences in the field.

We also commenced a little written homework.  Please continue to encourage your child to chat about what they are learning in class and learn new skills through play.

In October we aim to:

  • continue to tap a steady beat and the rhythm of our nursery rhymes
  • add labels to our nursery rhyme pictures
  • having ordered the letters in our names, now we will try to copy and write our name
  • be introduced to our phonic programme, learning the sounds: s,  a,  t,  p
  • become familiar with simple high frequency words in teacher's simple sentences, eg. It is a ...
  • copy and continue repeating patterns using different equipment and make shape/ topicwork patterns
  • play the Pattern Shape Train game (level 1) on Topmarks.co.uk
  • revise the concept of sorting as part of our Topicwork on Ourselves, Autumn and Halloween
  • practice forwards and backwards counting within 5
  • make sets for the numbers 1-5 and know how to form each number correctly
  • learn the 2d shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle
  • Topic based work on Ourselves~ particularly focusing on our senses and 'Me in Autumn' and lots of Halloween poems, songs, activities and keeping safe messages.

You may have heard your child chat about our new students, Niall and Conor who take our PE lessons every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  We love all their new games and certainly have lots of fun getting fit and active.  Have a look at our photographs of our 'Daily Mile' which we complete every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Sometimes we take our coloured scarves with us to make it into a very colourful fun run!

We celebrate five more birthdays in October so keep up to date with who the lucky five are and peruse through our P1 photo galleries that are updated regularly to see what we are getting up to.

Thank you for all your continued support and particularly for accessing the See-saw app~ we will all become familiar with it in the weeks ahead, it is very much appreciated and please continue to keep safe.
