P6 gained an insight into the profession of a mobile library van librarian.
How many schools do you visit?
My schedule operates on a two-weekly cycle. I visit 12 primary schools and 5 playgroups in each two week period.
How many books are on the van?
There would be approx. 1500 books on the Library van.
Describe your worst day at work?
My worst day at work would have been in 2003 when a car crashed into the van . Thankfully nobody got injured but it was a shock.
How much do you get paid?
My wage !! Not nearly enough.
What is your favourite book?
My favourite book is very hard to pick but I recently read a biography about one of my heroes Rory Gallagher. The book is called “ The Man Behind The Guitar” by Julian Vignoles. I loved this book because it gave me an insight into the life and times of one of Ireland’s greatest ever musicians.
Do you think Brexit will effect your job?
I don’t live across the border and I don’t think brexit will make a big difference to me in my work. I do, however, think it will have an impact on us all to some extent.
How long have you been doing this job for?
I have been doing this job now for seventeen years. I used to have a colleague who worked with me on the van but I have been working alone for the last five years.
What is the negative side of your profession?
I like most aspects of my job but there are a few niggles ! The computer operating system can sometimes be unreliable and slow, very frustrating when there are a lot of customers. I also get a little annoyed at times when there are very few new books coming through. Probably the worst thing is when I am returning to the Library yard in the evening and someone has parked in the entrance to the Library yard.
What inspired you to become a librarian?
I wouldn’t say I was inspired to become a Librarian but when the job became available and I read the job description I thought it was something I would like to do and, thankfully, I don’t have any regrets.
